Next I take a quick look at ARWU - on the prestige basis ARWU always have a decent list; on a methodology basis, the criteria mostly based on Nobel winners have always put me off.
There list for 2013 are:
1 - Harvard
2 - Stanford
3 - Berkeley
4 - MIT
5 - Cambridge
6 - Caltech
7 - Princeton
8 - Columbia
9 - Chicago
10 - Oxford
11 - Yale
12 - UCLA
So it is the THE's 13 (with Berkeley and UCLA) minus Imperial College London.
Also looked at by "Field" - SCI, ENG, LIFE, MED, SOC. Harvard is no. 1 in 4 except being 39 in ENG, where MIT is no. 1. Caltech has two N/A's, Princeton and Chicago each has one N/A (MED, ENG). Stanford has top 10 in each of the 5 categories, and average rank is better than Harvard (which is hurt by being no. 39 in ENG). Cambridge also comes out strong (right after Harvard).
