Fifty Key Figures in Islam (Routledge)

Today I just come across this book published in 2006. I look at the table of contents:

1. Prophet Muhammad

2. Abu Bakr

3. Umar ibn al-Khattab

4. Ali ibn Abi Talib

5. Mu'awiya

(ok, these are the first 4 caliphs plus founder of Umayyid dynasty)

6. Abu Hanifa

7. Malik ibn Anas

8. Rabi'a of Basra (who is this?)

9. Muhammad al-Shafi'i

10. Ahmad ibn Hannibal

(these are the founders of the legal schools)

11. Al-Ma'mun (I think he is an Abbasid Calph)

12. Yaqub ibn Ishaq al-Kindi (philosopher)

13. Abu al-Hasan al-Ashari (theologian)

14. Muhammad al-Tabari (historian)

15. Abu Nasr al-Farabi (philosopher)

16. Ubaydallah 'Al-Mahdi'

17. Abu al-Hasan Ali al-Mawardi

(Who are these 2?)

18.Abu Ali ibn Sina (philosopher)

19. Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali (theologian)

20. Muhmud ibn Umar al-Zamakhshari (who?)

21. Abu al-Walid Muhammad ibn Rushd (philosopher)

22. Salah al-Din (political figure)

23. Yahya Suhrawardi (philosopher)

24. Muhammad ibn Arabi (Sufi theologian / philosopher / mystic)

25. Nasir al-Din Tusi (philosopher, polymath)

26. Jalal al-Din Rumi (Sufi poet)

27. Ibn Taymiyya (sceptic philosopher?)

28. Abd al-Rahman ibn Khaldun (historian)

29. Al-Suyuti (historian)

30. Suleiman

31. Akbar

(these two are emperors)

32. Sadr al-Din Shirazi 'Mulla Sadra' (theologian)

33. Shah Wali-Allah (theologian)

34. Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab (theologian)

35-39. onwards are 19th / 20th century figures, starting with Sir Sayyid Ahmad Khan (India) and Sayyid Jamal al-Din 'Al-Afghani' (and his student Muhammad Abduh and his student Rashid Rida).

40. Muhammad Iqbal

The last 10 are clearly 20th century figures.

So this list is mostly religious / historians / philosophers type (few literary authors, and not too many political figures).

Comparing this with my list for CWANA and the Islamic portion of the South Asian list, excluding the "Literature Genre", and excluding pre/non-Islamic figures, then the following are those I include which is not in this Routledge list:

- al-Bukhari (hadith)

- al-Masudi (historian)

- Nizammulmulk (political thinker who is also a politician)

- Rashiduddin (historian)

- Mustafa Naima (historian)

- Abul Fazl (historian)

- Hujwiri (Sufi theologian)
