Western Sub-traditions

What are good ways to sub-divide "Western" tradition? Most methods that is "clean" are either period, or geographies / nations, or could even do by language. Traditions seem to cross very fluidly. Somehow I find no satisfying scheme yet that is similar to how I divide the East Asian, South Asian, or CWANA traditions.

The problem starts with the Renaissance transiton; no good solutions yet.
