I read J.G. Merquior's essay "The Brazilian and the Spanish American literary traditions: a constrastive view" - in this 20 page essay, the author threw out lots of names. Before is the list for the Brazilian authors (writing in Portuguese I assume). Names with x at the end are somewhat important authors (and/or those highlighted in the Introduction to Volume 3). Names with xx are literary leaders of their generation.

If we take ~33 years to be one generation, then major authors identified in started with Goncalves Diaz (b. 1823) and ends with Nelida Pinon (b. 1936) - and even the latter seems to be mentioned in the Introduction because she was one of the few female authors. Excluding her the list ends with Clarice Lispector (b. 1925, the foremost female author in the tradition). Altogether there are just 3-4 generations of key authors.
b. 1820-30s: Goncalves Dias (poet), Alencar (novelist), Machado (novelist)
b. 1860s: Euclides da Cunha (novelist)
b. 1890-1900s: Mario de Andrade (multiple genres), Graciliano Ramos (novelist), Drummond (poet), Guimaraes Rosa (novelist)
b. 1920s: Cabral (poet)
For Portuguese-language literature, it seems that after the Lusiads in the next version of the list I should consider including Machado de Assis.
