Piano Repertoire based on Schirmer Catalog

Piano repertoire is much bigger than other instruments. While for violinists (and probably a few other non piano instruments) growing up in the last quarter of the 20th century grew up with music published by International Music Co., pianists then mostly grew up with the yellow cover Schirmer books. I looked at their catalog, and extracted these composers / works names based on the following criteria:

1) Has Piano Solo works that have versions from multiple editors, or has at least 5 catalog items listed under their name

2) Has Piano concertos listed (under 2 pianos 4 hands section)

This yields a promising short list of 19 composers names. Below are listed in order of their birth years, and some key works based on scan of the catalog:

    • Bach (1685): Inventions, WTC, Tocata and Fugue in D minor (originally for organ), Concerto in D minor
    • Haydn (1732): Sonatas, Concerto #1 (note: Hob. XIV Divertimento, E flat major)
    • Clementi (1752): Gradus Ad Parnassum, Sonatinas
    • Mozart (1756): Concertos #5-6, 8-9, 11-27
    • Beethoven (1770): Sonatas, Concertos #1-5
    • Czerny (1791)
    • Schubert (1797)
    • Mendelssohn (1809): Concertos #1-2
    • Chopin (1810): Ballades, Etudes, Impromptus, Mazurkas, Nocturnes, Preludes, Scherzi, Waltzes, Misc, Concertos #1-2
    • Schumann (1810): Forest scenes, Concerto op.54
    • Liszt (1811): [Annees de Pelerinage, Final Years, Essentials], Concertos #1-2, Pathetique
    • Hanon (1819)
    • Brahms (1833): [piano works], Concertos op.15/83
    • Saint-Saens (1835): Concertos #2/4/5
    • Tchaikovsky (1840): Concerto #1
    • Grieg (1843): [Lyric pieces / piano album], Concerto op.16
    • Debussy (1862): [piano works]
    • Rachmaninoff (1873): Concertos #1-3
    • Kabalevsky (1904): Concerto #3 (“Youth”)

Out of these 19, 3 are listed mostly for etudes / sonatinas (Clementi, Czerny, Hanon) - so only 16 composers.
